2016 was the third full year that the Wakatipu High School Foundation (the Foundation) has operated in support of Wakatipu High School. In total five initiatives were supported to the value of $187,959 (2015: $152,614).
The reports for each of these are detailed on the following pages. You will see as you read through the attached reports that as in previous years, the High School Board of Trustees and staff went to some effort to select projects that would have the greatest impact, and have carried them out with diligence.
From a fund raising perspective we raised $244,054 (2015:155,702 ) net of all costs.
We are very pleased with the lift in the amount raised this year. The difference is primarily a $100,000 donation we received from an overseas party associated with Glenorchy Homestead Ltd who purchased a property in our school catchment and the donation was a part of a package of concessions they made to obtain Overseas Investment Office approval to acquire the land and we are very thankful to them.
The financial position of the Foundation continues to grow in strength since our inception in October 2013 which will greatly assist the objectives in the future. The position as at 31 Dec 2016 (see Summary Financial Position).
Our 2017 commitment to WHS is $197,000 (2016: $190,000) across the projects in the diagram.
On behalf of the Foundation I wish to once again thank the many people who assisted with these functions, including business owners and staff, fellow Foundation Trustees and our Executive Officer. I am proud to live in such a strong community willing to assist our High School. Special thanks Wayne Foley and Craig Robins who retired during the year. Wayne was the original inspiration and perspiration behind the Foundation and I am sure it will be a lasting legacy to his work with the school. We expect to be making a couple of new appointments to the Foundation Board in the near term.
Whilst all the funding initiatives have merit, the testimonials that we receive from a number of the recipients of Awhi funding as outlined on page quickly highlight the need and value of the Foundation. Our High School is responsible for taking the vast majority of our community’s young adults though their most formative educational years. Providing financial assistance to ensure these students can “reach for their heights” will significantly benefit not only the High School but also our entire community in the foreseeable future.
